The township Kedarnath, located approximately 223 km from Rishikesh in Uttarakhand on a stretch of land along the banks of Mandakini River is called the “Village of Kedarnath”. Gaurikund is where the trek to the Kedarnath Temple starts. Gaurikund is known for its Gaurikund Temple. This is where Goddess Parvati is believed to have performed penance in order to win the heart of Lord Shiva.

How to get to Kedarnath
Trek to Kedarnath: In 2013, the flash floods washed away the former six-hour trek via Rambara, Garur Chatti and Gaurikund to Kedarnath. Members of the Indian Army (NIM), along with the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering, have since built a 14-kilometre route starting from Gaurikund.
The trek climbs through Jungle Chatti and Chhoti Linchuli and Badi Linchuli. It then crosses the Mandakini River to reach the south side of Kedarnath. Another route goes up from Sonprayag (about 5 km short of Gaurikund) and continues to Kedarnath via Gomkara and Dev Vishnu and Dhumgajgiri.
